On Friday, Volvo announced the creation of a dedicated business unit to jumpstart the R&D, commercialization, and sales of self-driving products.
You're probably thinking this has to do with cars. Nope. Volvo Autonomous Solutions will focus on self-driving machines in mines, ports, and supply chain logistics.
- In June, Volvo unveiled Vera (pictured above right), a connected, electric, and fully autonomous truck. Vera's hauling shipping containers in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Companies are creating bespoke autonomous products that work in bounded settings—geofenced areas, private land, or specially designated city roads. I've recently covered two startups, Voyage and Optimus Ride, also taking this approach.
