Another founder-CEO is stepping away.
Following Amazon’s latest pandemic-era blowout earnings report, Jeff Bezos said yesterday he will transition to the executive chairman role in Q3 2021.
Next in line is AWS chief Andy Jassy. He presides over Amazon’s crown jewel, the world’s top cloud computing shop, and a core pillar of the modern internet. AWS is now on a $50 billion run rate, with margins Amazon’s retail org could only dream of (and its advertising arm might surpass).
As he moves from Amazon’s S-Team to CEO, Jassy will have plenty more on his plate. Our shortlist:
- Future-oriented bets like Alexa, cashierless stores, smart home technology, drones, and fulfillment automation
- The prospect of more regulation, including proposals to spin off AWS
- Strained relations with many gig workers and warehouse employees
Zoom out: A crosstown Seattle tech rival also has a cloud vet at the helm. Microsoft’s Satya Nadella or Jassy would tell you the same thing: It’s still early days for the cloud.
