Last night at the Los Angeles Auto Show, actor and former Ford assembly line worker Idris Elba lifted the wraps on the Detroit automaker's Mach-E. The Mustang-inspired all-electric SUV is a new spin on Ford's iconic, 55-year-old muscle car.

Five Mach-E models will be available in 2020 and 2021. The base version starts at $43,895, while the top-priced Mach-E GT starts at $60,500 (it goes 0–60 mph in just over three seconds). The EV has a range of 230 to 300 miles, depending on the model.

What's in the car?

  • A large touchscreen display with an "OK Ford" voice assistant, opt-in personalization features, and live navigation and charging station data
  • Ford will push over-the-air software updates to the cloud-connected car and let drivers use their smartphones as keys
  • A driver monitoring system and Ford's second-gen advanced driver assistance system

Big picture: Mach-E is the poster child of Ford's $11 billion push into electrification. While SUVs usually have higher margins, that may be offset by higher EV production costs. And the comparison you've been waiting for...the Mach-E seems like a possible Tesla challenger.
