Here’s a use for AI we can get behind. Nearly 2,000 years after Mount Vesuvius buried it in ash, a charred Roman scroll has finally been read (without anyone having to unroll the delicate thing). Using high-res X-ray scans and AI trained to spot ink on the hidden layers, researchers virtually unwrapped the Herculaneum scroll.

They uncovered 20 columns of long-lost text, which included a Stoic treatise on keeping your impulses in check (unlike the volcano next door). It’s the latest win for the Vesuvius Challenge, a Silicon Valley-backed contest to read hundreds of carbonized scrolls entombed in a luxury Roman villa. Now just wait ‘til the chatbots get ahold of this.
