Plus, a new viral AI speculative fiction report.

The Blu-ray just turned 20. To put that in perspective, here’s a partial list of things Blu-ray has outlived since it entered the scene in June 2006: the iPod, the OG Vine, Netflix’s DVD-by-mail business, and roughly 10,000 “is physical media dead?” think pieces.

In honor of the anniversary, here’s a quick trip down memory lane:

  • The random lineup that made up the first batch of Blu-rays. The initial releases included the Drew Barrymore-Adam Sandler rom-com 50 First Dates, as well as The Terminator and the Vin Diesel extreme sports spy thriller xXx.
  • It’s not actually “blue.” A Blu-ray player reads a disc by bouncing a laser off its surface, and that beam is technically violet.
  • Reports of its death have been greatly exaggerated. 4K Blu-ray sales in the US actually rose about 12% last year.
  • The bestselling Blu-ray of all time. Frozen, followed closely by Avatar.
