Samsung unveiled its latest device lineup yesterday in New York, accompanied by plenty of fanfare, guest appearances (@Satya Nadella), and pretty advanced tech.

  • 5G: The Galaxy Note 10 Plus smartphone has a 5G version that’ll support applications like live streaming and gaming. Most of us are still waiting for 5G networks, but that’s cool.
  • Unlocking: Machine learning software detects fingerprints from underneath the screen.
  • Movements: The S Pen (a smart, built-in stylus) offers gesture control so you can use apps without touching the screen. Samsung will also allow developers to add new motion controls.
  • Editing: Augmented reality photo and video editing tools let you doodle on top of your camera’s view in real time.

Noticeably absent was Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby, a focus of past exhibitions.

Zoom out: Samsung’s catering to the “next generation of users” for whom the digital and the physical are blurring together. Advanced tech (like 5G, AI, and smart assistants) is the backbone of new features that encourage users to experience the world through their devices...or at the very least, to use their devices to augment or capture every moment.
